# 3.5. Waste (Waste)

Scope 3, Category 5: Waste&#x20;

The Waste Calculation Engine within CarbonZE is designed to help you accurately calculate the emissions associated with the disposal and treatment of waste generated by your company’s operations during the reporting year. This tool is vital for understanding the environmental impact of your waste management practices and ensuring compliance with the Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Protocol.&#x20;

**Emissions from Waste**&#x20;

This category includes emissions from the disposal of solid waste. The emissions are accounted for based on the waste type, the method of treatment, and the quantity of waste.&#x20;

**Activity Data**&#x20;

To use the Waste Calculation Engine, you’ll need to input specific activity data: **Waste Type , Treatment method and Amount of Waste**.&#x20;

**Emission Factors**&#x20;

CarbonZE uses emission factors from reputable sources like the **Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), EPA** and **DEFRA** (the UK's Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs) to calculate the emissions from your waste. These factors are automatically applied once you input the activity data.&#x20;

**Assignment to GHG Scopes**&#x20;

In the context of the GHG Protocol, the Waste and Water modules in CarbonZE are part of **Scope 3.5** (Waste category). The emissions from both modules are combined and displayed on the dashboard as part of your company’s total Scope 3.5 emissions.&#x20;

**Treatment Methods**&#x20;

Understanding the different treatment methods is crucial as each method results in different levels of emissions:&#x20;

* **Open Loop**: Waste is processed in a way that it’s reused in another form, but not necessarily for the same purpose.&#x20;
* **Closed Loop**: Waste is recycled and used again for the same purpose, minimizing emissions.&#x20;
* **Landfill**: Waste is deposited in landfills, which typically results in higher emissions due to decomposition.&#x20;
* **Composting**: Organic waste is decomposed naturally, often leading to lower emissions compared to other disposal methods.&#x20;

By entering accurate data into the Waste Calculation Engine and understanding the impact of different waste treatment methods, you can effectively manage your organization’s waste-related emissions and contribute to more sustainable waste management practices.&#x20;
