# 3.7. Commuting

Scope 3.7 Employee Commuting Module: Emission Calculation and Data Entry

**Employee Commuting Emissions**

This category covers the emissions generated by employees commuting between their homes and their workplaces. The commuting emissions can arise from various modes of transportation, including:

* **Automobile Travel**
* **Bus Travel**
* **Train Travel**
* **Air Travel**
* **Other Modes of Transportation** (e.g., subway, cycling, walking)

Companies may also include emissions from teleworking (home office) in this category. However, walking and cycling are not included in the emission calculations as they do not generate emissions.

### **Calculation Methods**

To calculate employee commuting emissions, companies can use the following methods:

* **Distance-Based Method**: CarbonZE uses a distance-based approach, applying average emission factors of national or global mixes.

### **Employee Commuting Module Data Entry**

* You will need to estimate how many days per month each employee typically commutes to work and prove with evidence or sampling. For full-time employees, this number usually ranges between 19-22 days. Be sure to account for any home office days.
 * If you are unsure, national averages can be used. By default, 19 days will be selected.
 * It is highly recommended to estimate and enter this data, considering the impact of home office and the pandemic.
* **Average Distance Between Home and Work**: If the exact distance is unknown, an average value will be applied.
 * For example, the average distance in the EU is considered to be between 15 -24 km.

These steps will help you effectively monitor and manage the emissions generated from your employees' commuting activities. Accurate data entry is crucial for planning your sustainability strategies and determining actions to reduce your environmental impact.
